about

A short introduction

Scott May

Director | Writer | Shooter | Editor | Designer | Leader | Problem Solver

Managing creatives can be rewarding and more than a little challenging, but managing is not the same as leading. To effectively lead a team of creatives you have to provide creative support and constructive guidance, while not being overbearing and micromanaging. I’ve heard it said best, “Leadership has to be apparent - management has to be done incognito.”

To me, the key to producing great video is understanding its purpose. Video is a tool for sharing, it’s a tool for telling captivating stories, and I have a passion for telling these stories through video and teaching others how to do the same.

I learned the technical side of the business working in Master Control at channel 27 - KSNT. I learned to shoot, edit, and tell powerful stories while working as a news photographer at channel 13 - WIBW. As a commercial producer at channel 49 – KTKA I learned marketing & advertising and honed my skills both behind the camera and in the edit suite. At PBS I learned how to lead a team of creative professionals to create powerful marketing. As a small business owner I learned the importance of customer services, and as a freelance video producer I learned how to effectively work with clients to achieve a final product that helps grow their business. He thrives when expectations are clear and he has independence to get his tasks and/or projects complete. Skills: Scott is highly skilled in graphic arts, design, set/stage production, web design, audio/visual technology, and branding/marketing. But he excels in video production. His extensive experience in video filming, editing, and production was a major benefit to our work. I highly recommend Scott without reservation."

Timothy Claiborne

"I had the pleasure of working with Scott at KTKA when the ABC affiliate was starting up News operations. Working with him on a ground level operation, I saw him as a highly dedicated, creative professional. He worked in Marketing the start up and worked in all aspects of getting a News Department promoted. He has a hands on approach in all levels. From design, scripting, running camera, and editing a final product, Scott accepts all tasks and assignments with a "can do" attitude. I greatly enjoyed the time we worked together. I learned from him and I hope he learned from me."

Jonathan DeMeo

"I’ve worked with Scott on many live productions, and I enjoyed every minute. He is a versatile creative and is willing to troubleshoot and find a solution before, during and after the project. He understands each aspect of the creative process which is a huge plus in todays ever changing creative landscape."

Nathanael Nottage-Tacey

"Scott was a delight to have as my boss. Many managers struggle with finding a balance between micro managing and completely hands off. I can say that Scott was able to navigate those waters well. There were many times I needed help and Scott was more then happy to jump in. What made Scott stand out to me as an employee was his day to day demeanor. He spoke directly and with and with a ton of excitement. No matter to challenges of the day Scott would show up with a plan in hand for the day."

Problem Solver/Owner

maykingmedia

Small business owners don't have time or money to waste on marketing that doesn't work. I focus on taking the marketing burden off my clients' backs and placing it where it belongs – with a marketing professional. It's not enough for them to work IN their business; they must also spend time working ON their business! The truth is, most business owners rarely have the time to do both – well! I help our clients properly leverage every marketing opportunity in their local market. Clients choose me for my creative solutions to problems, budget-friendly approach to marketing, attention to detail, and ability to make complex concepts easy to understand.

Pastry Chef/Owner

Mayking Cakes & Confections

Yes, you read that correctly. I was a pastry chef! Mayking Cakes was a bakery that ran on relationships more than recipes. We focused mainly on the wedding industry, and our top priority was caring for our brides! We were known for both our amazing cakes and our dedication to our customers' every need. We started as a husband and wife team working part-time out of our kitchen at home and grew into a full-service bakery and coffee shop with 2 locations! As a small business owner, I learned firsthand what it takes to run a successful business. It gave me unique insights I utilize today as I work with other small businesses to help them grow.

The job consisted of two major fronts: the internal and external audio/video marketing and advertising of PBS and creating multimedia marketing campaigns for contracted PBS agents. The job required both a mastery of technical production know-how and the ability to work hand in hand with clients to produce effective marketing. PBS is where I learned to lead a team in planning, writing, production, editing, and delivery of successful advertising projects.

I honed my skills at telling a powerful story by being limited to doing so in 30-second increments! During my tenure at KTKA, I helped build an unforgettable promotional campaign and image for the station that propelled it to win numerous production awards and the coveted Kansas Association of Broadcasters "Station of the Year" award!
